When rumors started swirling about a foldable iPhone from Apple, I got excited. I had been watching from the sidelines as Android manufacturers rolled out foldables of every shape and size. The frustrating part of foldable technology is that it’s so compelling. Being able to carry a larger screen without lugging around a second device just makes sense, especially for someone like me who often needs more screen real estate to get work done. As tempting as those devices are, I don’t think I could ever fully integrate into the Android ecosystem due to my reliance and preference for using Apple devices.
Now, with the iPhone Duo finally announced, I won’t have to sit on the sidelines much longer.
Choosing the Duo over the standard “Pro” model was an easy call. Choosing a color, on the other hand, has been surprisingly difficult. At first, it was obvious I was going to get the light version. But now that I look at the marketing photos, the darker version is becoming more appealing to me. First-world problems, am I right?
Whichever color I land on, I’m planning to spring for the extra storage. After paying $2000 for a phone, why would anyone want to spend $200 more on storage? Well, the Duo isn’t just replacing my iPhone; it’s replacing my iPad mini too. I don’t want to regret not getting the extra space when I had the chance.
That said, the Duo isn’t without compromises. The lack of FaceID has given me pause. But the integrated TouchID will work fine, although being a little bit less convenient. Additionally, the lack of a third camera on the back is somewhat of a step backwards for me coming from the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Still, I think whatever features the Duo lacks, it more than makes up for in its ability to replace two devices. Not to mention that it just looks really cool!
Pre-orders open October 10, which gives me until then to pick a color. The wait is finally over for Apple to give us a foldable phone, and I cannot wait to get my hands on one.
